Amphibious Combat Vehicles: James Bond Tech for U.S. Military Special Operations
by David Crane
defrev at gmail.com
All photographic images contained in this article were taken by DefenseReview.com, and they are the exclusive property of DefenseReview.com. DefenseReview.com owns the copyright on these photos. All photos were shot with a 7.2-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot digital camera (Model #: DSC-P150).
Another very interesting vehicle concept DefenseReview saw at AUSA Winter Symposium and Exhibition 2007, albeit in 1/18-scale mockup form, was a high-speed "High Speed Amphibian" craft/vehicle called the Amphibious Combat Craft/Expeditionary (ACC/E) that can reportedly transition back and forth between land and water in approx. five seconds. The ACC/E is being designed and developed specifically for fast amphibious insertion and extraction of Special Operations personnel. To develop it, Lockheed Martin is utilizing Gibbs Technologies Ltd’s patented High Speed Amphibian (HSA) technology. Gibbs technologies developed their HSA tech for their Aquada, Humdinga, and Quadski amphibious vehicles.
Gibbs describes HSA as "one of the most exciting and ground-breaking developments in automotive and marine engineering," enabling an amphibian "to perform fast on both land and water." Just from what Defense Review has been able to glean from the Gibbs Technologies website and various articles about their vehicles on the web, DefenseReview is inclined to agree with the company’s "ground-breaking" claims.
From the mock-up, the Lockheed ACC/E resembles a modified, modernized, stealthified (anti-radar stealth) and "amphibianized" …
FERFRANS SOAR AR-Type CQB Subcarbines/SBRs: Photos and Video on the Way
By David Crane
defrev at gmail.com
DefenseReview recently got a chance to put approx. 1000 rounds through two 5.56×45mm NATO (5.56mm NATO)/.223 Rem. select-fire FERFRANS SOAR (Special Operations Assault Rifle) subcarbines/SBRs (Short-Barreled Rifles) with 10.5” and 11.5” barrels, respectively. We ran both guns on semi-auto and full-auto.
Designed specifically for Direct Action and Security Operations (particularly deployment/employment from vehicles), the FERFRANS SOAR is essentially a select-fire AR-15/M16-based short-barreled rifle (SBR) designed to fill the same role as the SOPMOD M4 CQBR (Close Quarters Battle Receiver), although the SOAR utilizes a…
DefenseReview Goes Shooting with 3-Gun Tactical Champion Shooter Taran Butler
By David Crane
defrev@gmail.com
Yesterday, I had the distinct pleasure of doing some advanced pistol training with (i.e. receiving some professional pistol instruction from) my friend Taran Butler. Taran is one of the best professional shooters (competitive shooters) in the world, and currently the number 1 (i.e. the best) 3-Gun Tactical shooter in the world. In the coming weeks, I’ll try to follow-up on the training I received, which consisted of shooting drills in the form of tactical match-style shooting "stages".
Anyway, while I was at Taran’s training facility, I…
Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald
The representative from southern California was surely an enemy of gun rights, but first she was a person, a family member and a friend. To those who knew her, I am sorry for your loss.

Blast from the Past: DefRev ‘Sections’ articles to be re-published, soon.
by David Crane
david at defensereview.com
DefenseReview will be re-publishing all of our articles that were originally published in our "Sections" section, for the purpose of archiving and ready availability to our readers. As we re-publish each one, we will identify the article appropriately so it is obvious to our readers. It should perhaps be noted that at the time these articles were originally published, they were significantly longer and more in-depth than our standard articles in our "Topics" section were. These "Sections" articles were also the only Defense Review articles that contained embedded photos, back then (2001-2003).
Things have changed quite a bit since then. All of our articles are now…
Video: HK MP7 PDW (Personal Defense Weapon): Serious Compact Firepower

Every once in awhile, as the editor of Defense Review, I have the rare and somewhat distinct pleasure of handling and firing a firearm that is not only brand spanking new, but actually manages to knock my socks off. Please keep in mind that I did not expect Heckler & Koch’s newest wondergun, the HK MP7A1 PDW(Personal Defense Weapon), to have such a profound affect on me. To be honest, I’ve had a few preformed ideas about the 4.6×30mm round it fires, and they haven’t exactly been positive. This is the result of two things: conversations with fairly knowledgeable people in the firearms community, and late results with the performance of the 5.56×45mm round in Afghanistan.
Truth is, most knowledgeable people that I’ve spoken with have talked rather condescendingly about PDW’s in general, and the ammunition they fire, in particular. This applies to both the…
DefRev Exclusive: Oshkosh Truck Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) Concepts

While we’re on the subject of JLTVs (Joint Light Tactical Vehicles) and vehicle prototype mock-ups at AUSA Winter Symposium and Exhibition 2007, we should perhaps also mention the two "conceptual designs and mockups" that Oshkosh Truck Corporation (OTC) Defense division had on display at their booth.
Unlike the GDLS Advanced Mobility Ground Vehicle (a.k.a. GDLS AGMV) tech demonstrator (an actual full-scale demonstration vehicle that you can sit in–and we did), the Oshkosh Defense JLTV prototype mockups/concepts don’t appear to utilize wheel hubs, so the tires appear to be more exposed. Other than that, one of the designs (2nd photo down, i.e. middle photo) appears to be somewhat similar in look to the AGMV.
Like the AGMV, both Oshkosh concepts…
The European Response to Va Tech
The Europeans are having the predicted reaction to the situation at Va. Tech. Der Speigel has posted a summary of European reactions in Blaming Charlton Heston.
They all make an unstated assumption that more gun control would have an effect on criminal access to firearms.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Examination of Britain’s crime rate proves that gun control laws do not decrease violent crime.
We know the gun control model does not prevent criminal access to firearms. We also know that law enforcement can not always be around to protect everyone.
We need to spread the discussion of how individuals have the responsibility to protect themselves beyond those interested in gun rights into mainstream media.
Those concerned about personal safety must be given alternatives beyond 911.
